湖北省造币厂是继广东造币厂之后，较早自铸银币的省份之一。昔时两广总督张之洞在建设广东造币厂之后奉旨转督两湖，于光绪十九年（公元1893年）奏准在湖北武昌设立造币厂，所制银币的图案与广东七钱二分银币相仿。乾隆时曾开铸镌有班禅头像的纪念性银币，道光元年（1821）鼓铸了犒赏用的银币，但用机械自铸新式银元则始于光绪八年（1882）吉林机械局铸造的厂平（吉林通用银两）一两币，因铸造数目甚少，后世有数，时市面流通的银币主要是洋钱。两广总督张之洞于十三年（1887年）奏准由广东造币厂试铸，正面铸有“光绪元宝”4字，上圈有“广东省造”4字，下圈有“库平七钱二分”6字，反面镌有龙形及一串英文，越二三年铸成，在市面流通，是为龙洋的起源。
我国清代银圆虽然制造时间不长，可是有许多珍品币撒播，这些难得一见的藏品，在近年的拍卖市场中却屡有泛起，如：浙江省造“光绪元宝”库平七钱二分银圆，2004年拍卖成交价为27.5万元。湖北省造库平银一两光绪元宝：光绪二十九年(公元1903年)铸，孤品，现藏台湾鸿禧美术馆，1991年6月在古玩文化艺术品交易拍卖会上以18.7万美元落槌，现市场估价150-200万元人民币。陕西省造库平七钱二分光绪元宝：光绪二十五年(公元1899年)铸，市场估价为30-50万元人民币。
从古到今，人们就有储蓄钱币的传统习俗，尤其是古钱币中的银元一直是一大热点。因为银元材质珍贵，艺术价值高。同时，银币制作量本就较少，加上清末、民国战乱连连等因素，一些较珍贵的银元品种如此枚银币，存世量稀少，极具收藏价值。
